Robert Habermeier was one of the key early researchers around Polkadot and Substrate. In Gavin Wood's 2018 Epicenter interview, Gavin credited the Web3 Foundation's research team, "particularly Rob at Parity," with work on the GRANDPA/SHAFT finality algorithm that was being merged into Substrate and discussed as part of Polkadot's consensus stack.
